Let’s talk medication
Whether it’s for a physical condition or a mental health condition, it’s important to know that it is OKAY to take medication if we need it. Being on meds is NOT a personal failure or “giving up.” Sometimes its the perfect solution for what our brain and body needs.
There are a bunch of different methods you can use for looking after your mental health. Medication is one of them, and it is a great resource that can be life-changing.
I remember I first started taking medication my Sophomore year of high school. For me, It has changed my life. I (and probably everyone around me) can definitely see a difference in me. I wished I had started medication earlier, but I was scared about the concept of it, what people would think of me, and if it would change me.
I first had a conversation with my parents because we both knew only therapy wasn’t working. Everyone’s journey is different, so having these key conversations with your psychologist/trusted friend is so important.
Here is an easy way to bring up the conversation with someone:
I would like to look into more options for help…I’ve heard medication has worked wonders for people…what do you think about it for me?
There’s no shame in taking medicine to feel okay for your physical OR mental health!! Sometimes our bodies don’t produce the right chemicals and it’s 100% okay to turn to medication if you and your doctor/psychiatrist/therapist decide that it’s best for you.
Those who are thinking about starting medication, I do understand we often hear unhelpful things that can shame us out of getting the support, like:
“It’s the easy way out.”
“You’re just taking happy pills.”
“You’re weak for taking them.”
“Why do you need that?”
Having a mental illness is hard enough as it is without the pill shaming stigma that floats among those struggling. This stigma makes it harder for people to seek the help they need. Some people are able to manage their mental health with talk therapy, exercise, eating healthy and a range of other methods and activities. But for many, medication is an effective part of their mental wellness.
There are many different types of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications that are available. Each do a different thing so make sure to do some research! Also, you may have to try a few! Trial and error is key in finding the best
How do antidepressants even work?
Antidepressants help relieve the symptoms of depression and the anxiety that usually comes with it. They can help balance chemicals in our brains. This can lead to improved moods, concentration, and sleepThey do not make you euphoric, but simply help you react more realistically in your emotional responses. You essentially will start to notice the little things that used to get you down, no longer have a huge impact on your mood.
Please speak to your doctor about any concerns, issues or questions you might have about meds!!🤍
